These articles are about fitness in general. There are two conventionally used definitions:
1. The condition of being physically fit and healthy. This is the dentition we normally use, the media uses this definition too. High level of fitness = very healthy, this person can do athletic things easily. All forms of training will increase the client’s level of fitness.
2. The quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task. – with this definition you could mean whether they are fit to drive a bus, be a parent, etc.
I’ll be focusing on #1, but I will cross the lines from time to time.
There is also the third use of the term and that will apply to posts about fitness competition. Though bikini and figure divisions certainly have captured the lion’s share of competitors. Fitness competitions are still out there, and not just those sanctioned by the NPC. Each sanctioning federation has a different defentition about what their competition criteria are, some require a gymnastics or aerobic dance routine and some are just posing and quarter turns. For example, NPC and IFBB require gymnastic elements. WBBF competitions are posing similar NPC to figure and bikini divisions.
When the general media uses the term, they are referring to regimented forms of exercise followed by people who hope to lose weight, improve their health and other typical goals.
