But we want you to be training on your own as well! Here is an outdoor workout to do in Downtown Los Angeles on your own. We can highlight a few locales to supercharge your workout.
Warm up at a parklet, which is a pocket park built right on the sidewalk. One on Spring Street between 5th and 7th streets contains exercise bikes with moving handlebars that will get your blood pumping. A chart in front of you reminds you how many calories you’d use and how much time it would take to ride a real bike to popular L.A. destinations like Union Station and Silverlake.
When you’re ready for something more heart-pumping, we can head for Hill Street to the bottom of Bunker Hill for a run up the steep 121 steps. You can even outrun the orange Victorian funicular next to you. You’ll improve your glutes, hamstrings and calves. There’s an open plaza at the top where you can jog. You can also head for the street but stick to the sidewalk as you run. Make three lefts on Olive, W 4th, and Hill Street until you reach the bottom of the steps once more. Then run back up again.
For a true challenge of endurance, carry dumbbells and kettlebells in each hand so you can walk around a route that includes Union Station, Los Angeles Plaza Park and historic Olvera Street. This is called a farmer carry and you want to complete a couple of rounds, which will equal about a mile. If you’re a guy, you can work up to 50 pounds in each hand. If you’re a gal, your recommended max is 24 pounds per hand.
