The first part of personal training is analysis to determine where you need improvement. In his 1954 book, Atlas of Men, American psychologist, William Sheldon described three basic human body types based on the inherent distribution of muscle, bone and fat.
The ectomorph has a fragile muscle and bone structure. Limbs are relatively long and shoulders tend to droop. Sheldon considered ectomorphs to be ruled by nerves and to tend toward mental rather than physical activity. Ectomorphs are not naturally strong and have to work especially hard to develop firm muscles and a visibly strong-looking physique.
The mesomorph is the body type dominated by muscle. They have visibly large muscle and bone structures. Sheldon considered the mesomorph to be action-oriented people. Muscles enlarge easily even in hands, arms and legs.
The endomorph is relatively round and soft. These are people who are conventionally judged as “fat.” They give the impression that the bottom of the body, the gut and abdomen appear to dominate. Many endomorphs will tend to seek weight loss alternatives.
